Frequently asked questions

Is there any difference between Baptism and Christening? - No, the words have the same meaning.

What does Baptism mean? - God loves all his people and at baptism we acknowledge that fact by turning directly towards his love.

What is my responsibility as a parent? - At St Peter's we are pleased to baptise children on the understanding that parents will try to follow the promises that they make in the baptism service, in particular that they will give their children a Christian upbringing within the family of the Church. Our prayer is always that when they are older children will make their own commitment to Christ and be confirmed.

What if I feel uncomfortable with these promises? - We will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have. If you decide not to proceed with baptism, you may wish to consider a service of thanksgiving.

What preparation is involved before the baptism? - We will provide information about the service and the promises that have to be made by parents and godparents. A member of our baptism visitor team will visit you before the service to talk about the service and the promises. They will also talk more generally about the work that we at St Peter’s do to support children and their parents in their journey of faith. A few days before the baptism we hold a rehearsal in church to make sure that everyone feels comfortable with what will happen.

When do baptisms take place at St Peter's? - Baptisms geberally take place, either during the 10 am Communion Service on the third Sunday of each month, or at a special service of baptism at 12 noon on the last Sunday of each month - but check with the Parish Office for availability.

Will my child be welcome at St Peter's? - Children are very welcome from the earliest age. Gems meets in the Church Hall on Mondays and Tuesdays, and on the 2nd and 4th Friday each month Young Vines meet for a short informal service, tea and games at the back if church. On the 1st Sunday of each month our 10 am service is generally an all age service in which children are often invited to take part. On other Sundays you may bring your children to the service and there is a Children's room available if you wish to make use of it. We also have Keystones, our Sunday School for older children.

What will St Peter's do to support us as parents? - We know that, for some, baptism is the first contact you may have had with the Church. We will welcome you and provide a place where you can think about faith and experience worship without feeling pressurised.
